What Is a Container Chassis?

What Is a Container Chassis?

Knowing the answer to "What is a container chassis?" lets you improve your hauling capabilities in mere moments. The term typically refers to a truck that no longer serves its original purpose and has been converted to haul containers. However, converted trailers aren't the only ones on the market, as manufacturers build custom models.

An Easier Way to Transport

A container chassis is a specifically designed vehicle for transporting standard-sized containers. The primary benefit of using one of these vehicles compared to a regular truck is the ability to move a container without first unloading it.

Thanks to many new additions, such as ABS, LED lights, weight sensors, and more, moving a shipping container from point A to point B has never been easier.

Types of Container Chassis

You may be surprised to know that there are three available models when picking a storage or transportation option.

Common

Unlike the other two types, this option needs no specification or customization/alteration. Transporting a container with this chassis is simple and accomplished by means of a fixed structure. For loading and unloading, you'll need to use an overhead crane or similar machinery. Common chassis allows for the transport of varying container sizes.

Tilt

These options are best used for quick offloading, as the trailer is equipped with a system for easier loading and unloading. Different from conventional models, this chassis is attached to both lower and upper frames. The frame is tilted upward on one side using a hydraulic press to facilitate the unloading and loading process.

Extendable

Adaptable to fit almost any container size, the extendable model is versatile and offers plenty of utility. Ultimately, the chassis works similarly to conventional options but can be extended from the rear. This extension allows for easy adaptability and fits almost any size of container.

What About Flatbeds?

A flatbed and container chassis aren't the same thing. However, using a conversion kit, you can convert a container chassis into a flatbed. The most common conversion adds a fifth wheel coupling and hitch to the trailer's front. This addition allows chains and straps to secure cargo on the bed with relative ease and security.

However, mounting the fifth wheel coupling is the most challenging aspect of the conversion. The height for the placement needs to be just right, as too high can cause the trailer to bottom out, while too low causes it to interfere with vision while driving.

Choosing the Best Chassis Option for You

Finding a container chassis that fits your needs is easy. Will it be used only for containers, and what's the weight limit you're looking for? These are the basic questions you'll need to answer first. So, take your time to pick and take a look at the used trailers for Sale in Edmonton, AB.
