Common Rules for Sharing the Road with Truckers
Posted on April 5, 2021
While traversing the roads in and around Edmonton, you are bound to see many truckers along the way. These huge semi-trucks are often carrying a load of cargo to their destination, and even if they aren't, they still weigh a lot. They also take up a good amount of the road, making it challenging to navigate at times. However, as long as everyone abides by the safety rules for sharing the road with truckers, then it will reduce the number of accidents along the way. Here are some rules of which to be aware when sharing the road with truckers.
Safety on the Road with Truckers
Both the trucker and the other vehicle have responsibilities while on the road to ensure safety. There needs to be adequate space to allow for the truck to move safely through the roadways. These common rules will aid in everyone's safety while driving with truckers:
Avoid blind spots: When you are driving next to a regular vehicle there are minimal, if any, blind spots. However, this isn't the case with large trucks. Due to their huge trailer, there is an area that is a blind spot, meaning they can't see cars next to them if they're in that spot. This can cause substantial danger if the truck decides to get over during that time. So, do not drive for extended periods in the blind spot area.
Pass with care: If you need to pass a trucker, do so with adequate care. There are two things to be aware of. First, you need to quickly move out of the blind spot as mentioned above. Secondly, you need to ensure when you pull in front of the truck after passing that you leave plenty of room for the truck. Remember that trucks are carrying a heavy load whether they are filled or not and coming to a stop is not easy. You don't want to get rammed by a truck that weighs up to 40 tons.
Remember to use your turn signals: When passing or changing lanes, make sure you use your turn signals. This lets the truck know that you are moving into a lane. If they were considering getting into that lane too, then they can wait or change their plan. You definitely don't want to collide with a semi-truck.
Don't use your brights: If you're approaching a truck, don't use your bright lights. This is especially critical if you are coming up behind it. The light reflects from the mirror into the truckers eyes and can cause them difficulty seeing.
Be patient: Trucks take a lot more time to get in and out of spaces and to make turns. They may need you to back up if they're making a turn and it's tight. There may not be enough room if you're sitting at the light in the front. Other times, you might have to wait a bit longer on a truck as it gets in and out of a spot. Don't get in a hurry and try to pass it. Just stay calm and be patient.
